Are you STILL using Admin?
About six weeks ago, I posted “botnets attack wordpress, protect your website!” with some pretty easy ways to protect your WordPress website. Although it seems the wave of botnet attacks have waned and so have the warnings in the WordPress community…
…Don’t rest easy just yet.
I took my own advice and installed Better WP Security on several of my personal websites, including Amy Susan Design. I mean, why not? I want to protect the hard work and countless hours I’ve put into creating and maintaining my websites and to have some cyber geek swoop in and mess up my sites would be a complete drag and super frustrating. Honestly, I’d be really, really ticked off.

Click on the picture above and you’ll see that since I installed Better WP Security the username “Admin” has been tried 226 times and after a preset number of times, they (whoever ‘they’ are) get locked out of my WordPress Dashboard. While I don’t like the idea of anyone trying to get into the backend of my site, just knowing they were locked out is very reassuring.

While it feels better knowing there is a shield between botnets and savvy computer hackers, I doubt any single security system is infallible, but just having some sort of security device may be enough of a deterrent to shoo them along to find an unprotected website, just don’t let it be yours!
nix the admin username
If you’re still using “Admin” as your WordPress username, change it!
